Hello there Denver/Lake Norman Rotarians! AND Happy Birthday Rotary!!! February 23 is Rotary’s 119th birthday. Little did Paul Harris, the Founder of Rotary, and 3 of his friends know the global impact their group would start when they met in Chicago on a Thursday evening in 1905. It was a meeting regarding observations Paul Harris had, in his many careers, of success and respect which could come from organizing professional acquaintances. How cool?
The members chose the name Rotary because initially they rotated subsequent weekly club meetings to each other's offices, although within a year, the Chicago club became so large it became necessary to adopt the now-common practice of a regular meeting place. The next four Rotary Clubs were organized in cities in the western United States, beginning with San Francisco, then Oakland, Seattle, and Los Angeles. The National Association of Rotary Clubs in America was formed in 1910. On November 3, 1910, a Rotary club began meeting in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, the beginning of the organization's internationality. And the history goes on from there. I did, and still do, think of the Rotary symbol as a cog. We are all Rotary “wheels” working in unison to carry forward parts of the vision I assume the founding members had. Thank you for all the ways in which your role helps keep all of the cogs moving.

David's neighbor Denver/Lake Norman Rotarian Denny Darr introduced him at the February 14th meeting. Coca Cola Consolidated is the largest Coca Cola bottler franchisee in the United States and has been in business for 121 years.

Founded in 1995 by Roger Ackerman, a Rotarian in Sumter, SC, The CART Fund (Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust) is a non-profit grassroots organization that provides “seed” money for cutting edge, high impact research grants to help find a treatment or cure for Alzheimer’s Disease.
Roger passed away in 2018, yet to this day, we still adhere to our founder’s initial mission – that 100% of every dollar donated goes directly to research! Since 1999, 64 grants totaling more than $11 million have been awarded to 62 recognized research institutions in the United States.
The CART Fund is a 501(C)3 organization (Federal ID #31-1466051) governed by an Executive Committee and a Board of Directors composed of representatives from qualified Rotary districts that support the program. CART is chartered as a nonprofit organization under the laws of the state of South Carolina.
CART has been recognized as an “angel charity” by the SC Secretary of State for being “extremely effective at giving a high percentage of their total expenditures directly to programs for their designated cause, their compliance with the S.C. Solicitation of Charitable Funds Act, and their high use of volunteers in their fundraising efforts.”
While primarily supported by members of Rotary Clubs in the United States, CART has an active volunteer base and can accept donations of major gifts, bequests or volunteer efforts from anyone.
